Tips For Better Health

Water: Are you drinking enough?

Practical Ways to Improve Your Quality of Life

About 71% of the earth's surface is covered by water.  With all this water out there, why are most people not drinking as much as they should?  Water is vitally important in order for human's to function properly, since every system of the body depends upon this sustaining substance.  In fact, about 50-65% of your body is made up of water!

Why Should I Drink Water?

A person can only survive for about 3 days if they don't drink any fluids.  Drinking soda, coffee, or juice will keep you alive, but you need pure water if you want to be as healthy as you can be!  Here are some of the benefits:

1.)  Reduces the Risk of a Heart Attack
A study at Loma Linda University discovered that people who drink 5+ glasses of water daily were less likely to die from heart disease than people who drank less than 2 glasses a day.

2.)  Helps With Weight Loss
Water helps your metabolism to work properly.  One of the main jobs of the liver is to convert the fat your body stores into energy.  If the kidneys aren't getting enough water, then the liver has to do their work along with it's own and the result is that it can't metabolize fat as efficiently.  Water also gives you the energy and hydration needed for exercise.  If your muscles have the proper amount of water, they will contract more easily which means your workout will be more effective and beneficial.  It's also true that many people think they're hungry when their body is actually thirsty for water!

3.)  It's Good For Your Body and Brain
Your body is constantly using up water.  Even minor dehydration can result in headaches, fatigue, lack of concentration, and irritability.  Drinking water can wash these symptoms away!

4.)  Keeps Your Skin Healthy
Water is important for preventing dry skin and acne.  It flushes impurities out of your skin.  As a result, your complexion is clear and your skin is healthy.

5.)  Keeps your muscles and joints in good shape
Your joints and muscles are mainly lubricated and cushioned by water. You can prevent fatigue and muscle cramps by drinking plenty of water before, during, and after hard work or exercise.

6.)  Cut down on disease and infection
Drinking water can help you to avoid kidney stones and reduce your risk of getting urinary tract infections.

7.)  Helps maintain proper digestion
If you don't drink enough water, the pancreas doesn't work efficiently, acids in the stomach are not properly neutralized, and intestine functions are hindered.  This can lead to constipation, false appendicitis pain, colitis pain, and  hiatus hernia.   Drinking a glass of water at least a half an hour before meal time will greatly help the digestion process.  Also, proper water intake can prevent heartburn.

What Are You Drinking?

If you've ever had the chance to visit Niagara Falls then you know that there's a lot of water flowing down those falls.  In fact, in just 30 seconds, 33 million gallons gush over that precipice.  We wish we could say that this is how much water Americans drink each day, but in reality, this is the amount of coffee that is consumed on a daily basis!

But aren't soft drinks, coffee, and other beverages just as good as drinking water?  "The fact is, coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate drinks cannot come close to the beneficial effects of water.  Studies have revealed that brown drink users lose body fluid due to the diuretic effect of tea, coffee, and soda.  Even though they may consume large amounts of fluids with their beverage, the net effect can be dehydration of body tissue.  Heavy tea drinkers often have vitamin B deficiencies, and tannin, a chemical component of tea, has been shown to interfere with iron absorption.  Tannin has also been linked to stomach cancer."

Here are the facts about Caffeine:

* May promote eating disorders
* Can increase infertility by 50%
* Can aggravate PMS symptoms
* Can elevate cholesterol and triglycerides
* Can cause skin rashes
* Can aggravate eczema and pimples
* Use by pregnant mothers can increase risk
   of diabetes in newborn

How Much is Enough?

If we had to replace all the water that our bodies use, we would have to drink 2,500 gallons each day. Thank God that He designed our bodies to re-use almost all of this water!  But we need a fresh supply every day because, on the daily average, the body loses: 2 to 4 cups of water through breathing, 2 cups through invisible perspiration, and six cups through elimination.  Also, more is lost through hard work, exercise, hot temperatures, dry air, alcohol and caffeine consumption.  The average person only drinks one cup of water a day!  This means that the body is forced to get it's needed water from other fluids and foods.

The average person should drink at least 6-8 glasses of pure water each and every day.  A general guideline is to drink 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight.  This means that you should drink half of your weight in ounces.  Here's what that equals out to:

Thirsty Yet?

“Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.” Isaiah 55:1. Water isn't just important for our physical health, but if we want to survive spiritually, then we need Jesus,  the one who gives water that springs up "into everlasting life".  (John 4:14)

“And the Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17.
