: Learning to Map: Challanging?
: Asheron Cosh February 16, 2008, 12:16 AM
I remember a while back when I was given a link from Master Kaeawc on learning to map. It's always been in my imagination to learn to map so that I can help those that are creating maps for the *<JO>* with something. Well, here I sit with the link to RichDiesal's JK2Radiant Mapping tutorial and wanted to ask this: Is it difficult in the path of the mapper? or is it rather easy? Some input could greatly help me :) Plus with my active imagination, I could come up with some very nice idea's for something.

Depends to be honest. I'm still learning but I find it a piece of cake, but then again, I can follow any tutorial and come up with something, not always any good though.

And, if you have idea's for the map I'm making, just give me a shout lol it's gonna be a completely self made project but I'm up for suggestions. A lot of what people will ask I already have in mind, all the traditional Jedi stuff anyway.

Well traditional is good, but time flies, don't you think? We are in year 122, so maybe you can modify some traditional things... To something new, hmm... As in change the textures a bit, but you'll still need to be able to recongize it... A bit more modern perhaps... ?!

See, all the idea's I have are unseen :) I just know that if I think really hard I could come up with some awesome idea's! If I come up with them, I'll msg you on Xfire ^^

Heck, I might even decide to make a map of my home planet, Iridonia ;)

Personally I didn't think it was that hard.  Then I released my first map and got a 0.3 score out of 10... lol.  That was baaad.

In the end I feel it is necessary to put serious hours into learning the ins and outs of both JKA, the compiler, the map builder, the Quake engine, models, scripting, and such.  Mapping is unlike other modifications to JKA in that you are building a three dimensional world in which all other modifications have to work.

Beyond all the technical aspects you have to learn how to make a map look good.  This requires lots of creativity, HIGH attention to detail, knowledge of how to scale things and all different types of architecture.  One mistake among thousands of brushes (brushes are the building blocks of maps, literally) and you won't be able to compile your map correctly.  It could be a big gaping hole (forgetting to make the skybox) or a tiny crack in the terrain.

I would say you need to spend 100-200 hours before you can make a quality map, depending on your creative and mathematical abilities.

*swallows heavily* Sounds like a challenge to me! hehe.. I might give it another shot. Last time I gave up on it after getting extremely confused on the compiling part of the tutorial you gave me. Perhaps I should try going over the first few steps a bit more :D

Yeah Master Kae's right. Detail is really difficult to get right, thats my biggest problem.

Oh and lighting, I REALLY REALLY REALLY dislike lighting -.-'

When I tried mapping myself, I used GtK Radiant. I still have the program just need to reinstall it. I might try it out again.  There is a tutorial in it. I don't know about making new maps from scratch right away, but maybe learn to edit and reskin some things in a map..  Atleast its an easy start.  I'd love to learn how to map.

I made a rectangle! Box < Rectangle!

And Knight Sho'hen, I actually have some nice idea's floating up around in my head atm. But they aren't for, like, a whole map. Just specific areas such as the entrance.

mmm If it was up to you guys, what would you say be easier to learn? Mapping, Website Design, Skinning, Modeling? I'd like to pick up a habit that could be beneficial for people.
: Re: Learning to Map: Challanging?
: Jorka Sho'Hen February 18, 2008, 03:34 AM
Skinning.

I'd say from easisit to hardest it goes,

Skinning,(big jump there lol) Mapping, Then it's kind of close between web design and modeling. If you include weighting with Modeling, I'd say thats the hardest.

Learning to map isnt really challanging, if you have enough time to do it.
and you must be very patient, i've done all , Skinning, Modelling ( i find this the hardest)
Mapping, and webdesign. if you need any help or tips feel free to ask me.

For me I feel the easiest is web design, mapping, then skinning, and i have only gotten as far as making fractal shapes in modeling. But then again i started web design about 11 years ago heh.

thats totally true, the more you practice the better you get , and how easyer you think it is.

I tried mapping once.  I don't have the patience.  I'm going to try skinning in the near future and will most likely drop it as well.

Yeah most of this sort of stuff takes awhile to learn, then making of it is just the same.
